01/05/2015 - Motorists Must Stop and Stay Stopped at Pedestrians Crossings

A child is going to be seriously injured or killed if motorists do not pay attention to the pedestrian lights at a Primary school in Donegal Town.

The pedestrian crossing in question is located outside Scoil Aodh Rua agus Nuala Primary School in Donegal Town.

The issue of cars failing to stop at the crossing has been highlighted to the Gardai and the Road Safety Officer with Donegal County Council Brian O’Donnell.

Brian O’Donnell said that a child could be seriously injured or killed if motorist’s behaviour does not change soon and he’s appealing to motorists to pay closer attention to the lights stating that “on a number of occasions cars have broken the lights with no regard at all to the children crossing over to school. A number of near misses have been reported and this has become a cause of great concern to everyone”.

He added “14 children aged 14 and under died as a result of road traffic accidents in 2014 compared with 5 in 2013. We have to accept that deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads are preventable but if the behaviour of the motorists at this school crossing continues a child is going to be seriously injured or worse. Children are our most vulnerable road users, and it is up to all of us to safeguard them on our roads”.

The simple fact is that a pedestrian crossing is a spot where drivers must stop their vehicles and allow people to cross the road when lights are red.

When the pedestrian-crossing light turns red, drivers must stop.
